Australia’s South West

Australia’s South West is an up and coming region for backpacking in Western Australia, with many attractions within short distances of each other. It's the 'green' outback as opposed to the red bush and desert imagery that dominates the central and northern areas. It's dotted with giant 400 year old karri and tingle tree forests all around Pemberton and Denmark and the unique Tree Top Walk can be found in the Valley of the Giants, near Walpole.

Head down the coast road to Bunbury, the south-west's dolphin capital. Snorkel with these friendly creatures, laze on the beach or watch the world go by on a city centre terrace.

Best known for its amazing coastline and natural features, Albany offers many activities for the adventurous: hang gliding, abseiling and scuba diving to name but a few. The Gap, Blow Holes and Natural Bridge are must sees and the restaurants, pubs and clubs keep you going after hours.

One of the most popular itineraries would be Dunsborough to Augusta, with an essential stopover in Margaret River. Augusta is at the south-western tip of Western Australia, where the Indian and Southern Ocean meet. Enjoy the views from the historical lighthouse and the many other lookouts in the area. Canoe the Blackwood River, explore the Jewel Cave or feed stingrays at Hamelin Bay. Bushwalking is popular especially in the spring when the surroundings are covered with colourful wildflowers.

Margaret River is only a three hour drive south of Perth. Combine visits to boutique wineries and restaurants, with world-class surfing beaches and fascinating caves.

Further east is Esperance, with its stunning white sand beaches and Bay of 100 Isles. The south west can be as active or as relaxing as you like - from whale watching and diving to secluded beaches to farmland dotted with tea houses and art and craft shops.
