Experience Perth

Perth

The pristine environment is only one of Western Australia’s diverse attractions, which for most international backpackers starts at the gateway city of Perth. Increasingly positioned as Australia's best and most economical gateway city, Perth is actually closer to Singapore than Sydney and has the lowest international airfares and the fastest journey times from most major UK and European cities. The cost of living is also notably cheaper than the east coast.

Perth is a modern and vibrant city situated on the beautiful Swan River which can be cycled around for the best sightseeing. Glorious views and sunsets can be had from Kings Park, and there are more pubs, clubs, nightlife and restaurants per capita than anywhere else in Australia.

Bustling city and beach suburbs such as NorthbridgeScarborough and Cottesloe are the most popular for backpackers. Surfers looking for a challenge should head a little further north up the Sunset Coast to Trigg Beach

Fremantle

The historic port of Fremantle, or ‘Freo’ as it's known locally, was first settled in the 1830’s and famous for its 'cappuccino strip' and interesting weekend markets.

Perth's port of Fremantle, boasts a convict-built police station, courthouse and prison. During the 1980s, the port took on new glamour when it became the centre for the America's Cup regatta. Nowadays, the sea air, weekend markets and outdoor cafés draw the crowds from elsewhere in Perth, particularly at the weekends.

Rottnest Island

You can take the ferry to Rottnest Island from Barrack Street Jetty, Fremantle or Hillarys Boat Harbour. ‘Rotto’, as it’s known by the locals, is an amazing Indian Ocean paradise island located just 30 minutes from the city. Meet the cute and endearing Quokkas and enjoy the excellent diving Rottnest has to offer.

Other popular day-trips from Perth include the wineries of Swan Valley, wildlife parks, Wave Rock and the town of York, which was first settled in 1831 and offers a thrilling combination of historical attractions and extreme sports, including skydiving from 12,000 feet at a speed of 200 kilometres per hour!
